So like many in the community, I was saddened to hear about the passing of John Blanche, an artist who helped establish the visual languages that a good portion of the miniature painting hobby lives in. But many others knew him and his work far better than I, and may moving commentaries have been posted. But honestly, I’d recommend just revisiting some of his work and looking for ways to have it inspire you moving forward.
But I digress.
I got a John Blanche’s En Garde miniature from the new kickstarter from Nigel via the mysterious Lord Broheim. I was told to get it painted up and share it around. Then I got the kick in the pants I needed to get it painted up!
This was in a Zorn palette, but with the addition of a turquoise to work into the metallics and shadows, inspired by a John Blanche piece.
I had a lot of fun with this one, working at a more realistically proportioned 54mm! I also had a blast adding little touches like the starfish and two headed bird!
Maybe I’ll get to play sometime
