Playing Around with Oil Paints – Work in Progress

So, if its not immediately apparent somehow, I have no particular background in painting and art, and I’m really just mucking about and might as well be fingerpainting my toy dollies.

But, I find painting sort of endlessly and intrinsically fascinating so I always like diving into new areas. Over the last few years, I’ve started muddling around with oil paints, which always seemed like an ‘artist’ thing that wasn’t for finger-painting lower primates like me.

However, I have overcome that fear and started smearing oilpaints on things. It started with some pin washes for vehicles, and grew into some Bob Ross style background paintings for dioramas and cool wash effects on minis.

I didn’t think I could actually paint a miniature entirely in oil paints, that would be crazy, likely sacrilegious. Defying the gods of common sense, I signed up for a oil painting workshop with the amazing Lukas Zaba (@zabaart_) who showed me another way. This wet-on-wet style blended with some of the Bob Ross thingies I had been playing with. Working with oils does require re-learning some basics of how paint works, but the blending and manipulation of pushing paint around is downright magical. Love it!

This is the first mini I’ve done in all oils, still glistening and wet. Now, I will probably go in and do a bit of recess shading and some details by overpainting in acrylics- a bit of a crutch but I was struggling with my point control in the new medium.

So nothing to spectacular yet, but perhaps the first small step on a new journey! Will try to post an update after it dries!
