A couple weeks ago I got invited up to “TonyCon’ at the LWTV headquarters in York PA.
What a cool place! This clubhouse is super awesome, from decor to tables to storage.
This was a one-day event with a dozen GMs putting on awesome game events.

There were amazing games, including some games of Midgard, ACW, and WWII!

Starship Troopers
So I wasn’t able to stay long, but I was able to join in Dave’s game of Starship Troopers! Based on the movie version, this was an awesome game where 3 players cooperated as commanders of separate mobile infantry platoons, exploring the bug planet to blow up nests and accomplish secret objectives. The Bugs can be run using automated rules, but I jumped in to give them a little extra oomph.
This started out with each platoon leader buying upgrades for their guys, including heavy weapons and recon teams, as well as air transport strikes. Their main goal was to take out the 4 bug nests before time ran out, and each had a secret secondary objective- Jerz had to hunt the tiger bugs, our Pilot had to search the outpost, and the last player needed to get a camera crew to witness blowing up a bugs nest then return safely.
The bugs run on a card drawing system, which activate a certain number of bugs and push them forward.

The troopers deployed and started pushing in towards the nests. I spawned huge numbers of bugs, but didnt draw the numbers cards needed to activate them and rush the enemy.

They were able to close in and blow up my first nest!

However, across the board, I was able to pull some ambush cards to attack Jerz’s forces! I thought for sure I had him surrounded and done for. I ate one squad of troopers.

But then, he was able to use his skyhook to do an air transport to save two squads, plucking them from doom.

And the final squad got a crit order role, so was able to move twice, sprinting to safety! My plans were thwarted.

Suddenly, I pulled a card for a new hole and a huge tanker bug, which emerged ready to eat all the humans!

The humans reacted immediately, swarming the tanker bug in combat trying to break through its armor. The bug stomped on several squads, but in the end the hordes of mammals broke through its armor!

However, I had bled out enough time. The humans ran out of turns, with nests still on the table! Despite their successes, victory went to the bugs!

Had a great time, this system was a blast. Thanks again to all the LWTV folks for inviting us over!
